The Single Mother

I was born in 1952. My name B. C. Galindo. I’m from a small village called Armería, in Colima (state) in the country of Mexico. In my parents’ marriage we were 9 siblings. 5 men and 4 sisters.

“I was raped when I was 14, and when I was 16, I became a mom.”

Of my first child, in my village, people are, oh very cruel — it was pointed out to me that I was no longer a virgin and it was revealed (what had happened when I was 14). There was a woman who revealed it to her father because she was jealous of me and I got angry because I thought of them as my uncle, aunt, and cousins. I got so angry at that injustice that I don’t know how it was that I slept with her husband and got pregnant with my first child, but it was out of revenge and I took responsibility for my little boy and I didn’t want anything (to do) with men. I had a dad, my mother—and my dad was too violent with my mom, so I only used men because there was no other way.

Storyteller B. C. Galindo did not provide a biography.
